  • Recently JAMA published results of a long term controlled study, The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI):
  • 26% increase in invasive breast cancer
  • 41% increase in strokes
  • 29% increase in heart attacks
  • Doubled rates of blood clots in legs and lungs
  • Increased risk for gallbladder and liver disease
  • Double the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia
  • This is NOT the first study to show these results but it is the first one the scientific community is listening to.

Black Cohosh Extract: A Double-Blind Study
  • Summary:
  • 80 pts. were given either black cohosh extract (2 tablets twice daily providing 4 mg of 27-deoxyacteine), or conjugated estrogens (0.625 mg daily), or placebo for 12 weeks. Cimicifuga extract produced better results in the Kupperman Menopausal Index, HAMA, and vaginal cytology than estrogens or placebo.

Black Cohosh Extract: A Double-Blind Study
  • Summary:
  • 62 postmenopausal women were treated either with black cohosh (40 mg), estrogen (0.6 mg), or placebo. Results indicated that black cohosh was equipotent to estrogen and and superior to placebo in reducing menopausal complaints. Black cohosh exerted desired effects on the brain and hypothalamus, bone, and in the vagina, but without exerting uterotrophic effects.
