Night sweats, Hot flashes, Mood swings and Disturbed sleep

Q: I haven't slept in months and my night sweats are unbearable. What can you suggest?

A: Menopause can be challenging with night sweats, hot flashes, mood swings and sleep disturbances. During menopause, many women develop terrible insomnia. There are several types of insomnia. Some women can't fall asleep, others fall asleep fine but wake up several hours later and can't fall back to sleep, while still others canít fall asleep and stay asleep. In its worst form, insomnia lasts for months or years. It should be treated quickly, however, as high blood pressure, weight gain and more severe menopausal symptoms can occur. Menopausal women can have low progesterone (the sleep-inducing hormone) and may need 200mg of the prescription bioidentical progesterone called Prometrium at bedtime to restore restful sleep. Prometrium should also be taken along with natural sleep aids. Most of us need 3mg of melatonin at bedtime along with sleep-promoting herbs including passionflower, chamomile, valerian and hops. Melatonin is secreted by the brain when our bedroom is pitch-black. City living disrupts this secretion due to the light we are exposed to at bedtime. Getting your night sweats under control is important so that you can get a full night of uninterrupted sleep. MENOsmart Plus containing powerful herbs including sage for night sweats is a super-charged formula for hot flashes and night sweats.
