In this issue:

Dear Friends,

Please read the Natural Health Product Licensing article in this newsletter because we need your help. Lorna Vanderhaeghe Health Solutions, Inc. has diligently applied for Natural Health Product licenses for all of our products. Like many companies we are having our challenges. We need every person who uses natural remedies in Canada to write a letter to their MP. If you use my products and love them, please write today. When big multi-national companies were trying to get Health Canada's approval for bovine growth hormone use in Canada, it was the average person that finally persuaded government officials that Canadians did not want bovine growth hormone in our food. We can do the same again with natural health products. We just have to tell enough politicians that we will not vote for them if they allow our natural health products to be removed from the shelves.

To my American friends, I will be launching my line of supplements into the U.S. in health food stores in September. In the meantime you will be able to purchase from several online stores that ship to the U.S. Click the American flag on this website for those companies that ship to the U.S.

Thank you again to every woman who has written letters of support over the last year. Your dedication to Lorna Vanderhaeghe products have ensured that the products you love will be available for years to come.

Join us on Facebook and Twitter as we will be doing lots of freebies and promotions over the next year.

Kind regards, Lorna

SSRI Antidepressants Linked to Breast Cancer

As many readers will be aware, I have previously written about the link between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and increased breast cancer risk. Last year, I also reported on the discovery that a lot of HRT research published in medical journals has actually been ghost-written by writers hired by pharmaceutical giant Wyeth, and that this research has promoted the benefits of HRT while minimizing the risks. Now this disturbing trend has been repeated with research on antidepressants.
For decades, the medical community has debated whether antidepressant medications stimulate the growth of breast and ovarian cancers; research results seemed to be mixed. However, we now know that many of the studies that showed no connection between antidepressants and breast cancer were, infact, carried out by researchers with ties to the pharmaceutical industry. PLoS online, the online journal of the Public Library of Science, reported earlier this month that in the 61 studies examined, the researchers who were associated with the drug companies reported no connection between antidepressants and cancer. Forty-three percent of independent researchers reported an association between antidepressants and an increased risk of cancer. The antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a group that includes Prozac (fluoxetine is the generic name), Paxil (paroxetine) and Zoloft (sertraline), were the drugs associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. This latest PLoS online report was conducted by researchers from the Center for Ethics at Harvard University in Boston. They noted that although the potential risk is relatively small-women should nevertheless be informed of it. Considering that back in 1960 one in twenty women developed breast cancer and today the numbers are 1 in 9 we should do everything in our power to protect ourselves from breast cancer.
Between 1981 and 2000, use of antidepressants has increased by 353 percent. SSRIs have replaced many older antidepressants, and comprise over 80 percent of the depression drug market. Depression is one of the most common diagnoses in medical offices. Side effects to SSRIs are common, especially in women, and include dramatic weight gain and stubborn weight loss, neurological problems, gastrointestinal upset and dermatological effects. It is important not to discontinue your use of antidepressants without consulting your doctor. However, in light of the above facts, it is equally important to explore alternatives to SSRIs. If you wish to stop your antidepressant medication then you need to wean off it slowly and use SMILE my special 5-HTP supplement. SMILE elevates serotonin naturally. It has been researched for anxiety, depression, weight loss, fibromyalgia, migraines, severe PMS and general mood enhancement. Advise your doctor that you want a prescription for progressively lower doses of your antidepressant medication. Let your doctor know you are going to use SMILE as a replacement. You can start weaning off your medication over a 4 week period. During week one, take 100 mg of SMILE in the morning and at bedtime. In week two, lower your dose of antidepressant medication and take 100 mg of SMILE at morning, dinner and bedtime. Then in week three, your dosage of antidepressant medication should be lowered again and you can take 100 mg of SMILE at breakfast, 100 mg before dinner and 200 mg at bedtime. In week four, you will be on a very low dose of antidepressant medication and will need to take 200 mg of SMILE before breakfast, dinner and bedtime. In week five, you are no longer on antidepressant medication and now you can stay on SMILE. Take one scoop of Magsmart at bedtime during this process to ensure that you do not experience side effects from withdrawal of the antidepressant medication.
If you have been on antidepressant medications you will want to start using Estrosmart to halt abnormal cell growth in the breast, uterus or ovaries. Estrosmart contains indole-3-carbinol, sulforaphane, DIM, D-glucarate, curcumin, green tea extract and rosemary for breast cancer protection, 2 capsules per day.

Beautiful Legs for Summer

Do you avoid wearing shorts due to the unsightly veins on your legs? Varicose veins are enlarged veins commonly found in the legs. The veins often appear dark purple or blue and twisted and bulging above the skin's surface. Varicose veins, called hemorrhoids, can form in the vagina or around the anus.
Leg veins have the toughest job. The task of carrying blood from the bottom of the body up to the heart makes the legs a prime location for varicose, spider and hemorrhoid veins. Hormonal changes that occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, as well as taking birth control pills or HRT containing estrogen and progesterone, also increase the risk of varicose or spider veins. Obesity and constipation can make vein problems worse.
Diosmin, horse chestnut, Butcher's broom and hesperidin, found in Veinsmart, will quickly deal with swollen legs and ankles, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency and eventually spider veins. Diosmin improves vein tone, increases lymphatic drainage, inhibits inflammation, strengthens capillaries, promotes healing of varicose ulcers and has been shown in clinical studies to eliminate acute and chronic hemorrhoids.
Horse chestnut extract reduces pain and heaviness in the legs, night-time cramps in the calves, itchy and swollen legs, hemorrhoids and varicose veins. Aescin, the active ingredient in horse chestnut, tones the walls of the veins and improves the flow of blood back to the heart.
Butcher's broom extract acts on lymphatic drainage, the constriction of blood vessels and microcirculation, when used in combination with the other ingredients in Veinsmart. Butcher's broom has been found to reduce blood pooling in the lower leg and also the size of the ankle and calf.
Hesperidin is the main flavonoid in lemons and oranges. Hesperidin reduces the permeability of capillaries and is anti-inflammatory. In combination with diosmin, hesperidin significantly improves acute internal hemorrhoids.
No longer will you have to wear those constricting support hose, use nasty suppositories or creams and hide your legs under clothing. Veinsmart comes to the rescue. Take photos of your veins because the uglier the varicose veins are, the faster Veinsmart works. Within 90 days you will see a dramatic difference in your veins.

Eat Your Broccoli for Anti-Cancer Benefits

Mom always said "Eat your broccoli" and she was right about cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts and broccoli promoting health. Among the many beneficial plant elements in these vegetables is sulforaphane, which I have written about extensively as a detoxifier of hormone-disrupting chemicals and a preventive nutrient against numerous types of cancer including prostate, breast, skin, colon, liver and bladder. This is why I have included it in Estrosmart and Estrosmart Plus with Vitex.

Butterbur and 5-HTP Protect Against Summer Migraines

Not everyone looks forward to warmer weather. For people who suffer from migraines, the heat can be a major trigger. One of the best remedies for migraines is butterbur. Several studies have shown this herb's ability to reduce the severity and frequency of migraines, the number of days suffering, as well as nausea and vomiting. Sometimes migraines are triggered by an underlying hormone imbalance, such as low serotonin. In this case, 5-HTP is an excellent treatment to raise serotonin levels and control migraines. In one double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 90 percent of study participants found that a daily dose of 400 mg of 5-HTP reduced the frequency, severity and duration of their migraines. A lesser dose of 200 mg of 5-HTP has been shown to be as effective as a leading migraine drug in treating this common seasonal problem. SMILE 5-HTP is 99 percent pure and has a special enteric-coating for migraines, boosting mood, reducing anxiety and treating the symptoms of fibromyalgia pain.

Two-Thirds of Canadians Use Natural Health Products

More than two-thirds of Canadians use natural products, according to a recent Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of Alive Magazine. Sixty-eight percent of Canadian adults use one or more of the following natural products:
  • Vitamins and minerals (63 percent)
  • Functional foods and beverages (50)
  • Supplements (36)
  • Natural household goods/cleaning products (36)
  • Organic foods and beverages (30)
  • Herbal/homeopathic remedies (24)
  • Natural/organic personal care (17)

I am thrilled by these results as more and more people turn to safe and effective natural health products backed by a growing body of research. However, as many of you will be aware, the Canadian natural health product industry is currently dealing with regulatory challenges that, unless urgently corrected, will impact people's ability to purchase many of the products that they have come to rely on.
The Canadian Health Food Association and other factions are working diligently to address the issues facing all natural health product companies manufacturing or distributing natural health products in Canada. Every company I know is struggling to comply with regulations to ensure that our products ultimately receive natural product numbers, a laborious and expensive approval process. Nevertheless, there is a huge backlog of applications with the NHPD as part of what Stuart Harries, executive editor of Alive Magazine, has called "a confusing and difficult set of efficacy and safety requirements that have left thousands of our favourite natural health products in the dark." The result is that, if Health Canada decides to enforce its policies (as it has threatened then retracted more than once already), many effective (but as yet unapproved) products will no longer be available for sale.

I Need Your Help
We are in a waiting game-a dangerous game to the many who need natural health products for their health and well-being. Imagine walking into your local health food store and finding empty shelves. If you rely on natural health products, or even if you are concerned about the state of the industry, I urge you to speak to your Member of Parliament. If you do not know who your MP is, type your postal code into this Parliament of Canada search feature. For those of you who have been using Estrosmart, Adrenasmart and Thyrosmart write to your MP and state the following:

I have been using Estrosmart for ____________years for the following health condition _________________ (insert the condition). I can not live without this effective product. Please licence this product as soon as possible.
If we have thousands of women write this letter we will be able to get our licence faster. We have supplied boxes of clinical evidence for all of my products. Your help is needed now!

Help for PCOS

Acne, oily hair, infertility, pelvic pain, male facial hair growth in women (e.g. above the lip or under the chin), belly fat, weight gain, period problems, anxiety or depression and skin tags are all associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a condition that affects 1 in 20 North American women of childbearing age. PCOS has traditionally been very difficult to treat. However, research on certain nutrients continues to provide positive news for PCOS sufferers. The research on ChirositolTM, the proprietary ingredient in Glucosmart, is by far the most comprehensive I have seen, and I have been receiving excellent testimonials about the Glucosmart and Estrosmart combination in women with PCOS.

I am 27 years old with PCOS since 2002. I ballooned from a svelte 160 at 5'9 to a whopping 300lbs.
I saw an advertisement about your Glucosmart, and was excited to try it. Since 2002 I have been on Metformin, and Progesterone to induce my monthly cycles, but the medications themselves were wreaking havoc on my physical well being, as well as mental ( I tried to lose weight many times, but with the Progesterone, I found it nearly impossible, and with Metformin, I felt like fainting).
Two weeks ago, I was told by my endocronologist that, whether I wanted to or not, I had to take Progesterone this month. Well, my mom and I marched into the health food store, and purchased your Glucosmart, went grocery shopping with your book in my hands, and started immediately. Lorna, it has been two weeks to the day today, and my montly cycle started on its OWN yesterday. WITH NO HORMONE INDUCING PILLS!! This will be the first time my body has naturally regulated itself since March 2002. I know your book said to NOT weigh yourself for the six weeks, but I just had to!! I wanted to see for myself. I've lost 15 pounds so far! And yes, I had my husband hide the scale so I will not weigh again until the 6 weeks are done. I can't wait to see how much I've lost!
Again, thank you with all my heart.
~R.M.~
