Suggested Use: 2 – 4 capsules daily with meals or as directed by a health practitioner. Does not need refrigeration Vitex contains no hormones and has no direct hormonal activity and is not phytoestrogenic. It contains flavonoids, iridoid, glycosides and terpenoids. Its main active ingredients, aucubine and agnusides, work on the pituitary gland to stimulate the production of lutenizing hormone (LH), which in turn increases progesterone and helps regulate the menstrual cycle. It also inhibits excessive production of prolactin found in women with polycystic ovarian disease and in women who are infertile. Prolactin levels have also been found to be elevated in women with low thyroid (ask your retailer about Thyrosense). Vitex is a very well researched herb. It has a strong reputation in the traditional treatment of menstrual abnormalities, PMS, menopausal complaints, and infertility. In 1997 a team of German researchers found in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study that Vitex was more effective in the treatment of PMS complaints (breast tenderness, edema, tension headaches, constipation, depression, skin problems) than Vitamin B 6 which is commonly used for PMS. Another study found that ninety percent of the 1,542 female participants had relief from the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Further double-blind research performed in Germany confirmed that Vitex can lower prolactin levels in women. Another study showed that hormonal acne was reduced using vitex. Vitex’s full effects will be experienced over several months. Those with PMS notice symptom relief within one to two menstrual cycles. Normalizing prolactin levels can take many months using Vitex. Vitex should be discontinued during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
