Estrogen Friend or Foe?

Too much estrogen and our risk of breast and uterine cancer rises, endometriosis and ovarian cysts develop, PMS, uterine fibroid tumors and painful breast cysts occur -- too little estrogen and hot flashes, low libido, thinning hair, aging skin and osteoporosis develop. Estrogen balance is the key to reducing breast and other cancers, preventing hot flashes, halting menopausal symptoms, reducing body fat, maintaining libido, memory and heart function, and eliminating PMS. It is not just menopause that causes hormonal imbalances. Certain foods, stress, a lack of exercise and environmental toxins can all wreak havoc with our estrogens.

These factors have also been shown to cause good estrogens to be converted to cancer-causing estrogens. And now a new and more serious alarm bell has been raised - estrogen mimickers in our environment called xenoestrogens (pronounced 'zeno' estrogens) found in plastics, pesticide-laden foods, nail polish, dry cleaned clothing and bleached feminine hygiene products are further disrupting our estrogen balance causing cancer, infertility and birth defects.

Fortunately, keeping our estrogens healthy and balanced is easier than you think. We must eat only organic foods as pesticide-laden fruits and vegetables are the main source of xenoestrogens. Choose lots of cruciferous veggies, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower and kale as they contain certain plant nutrients that help keep estrogens healthy and stop them from converting to cancer causing estrogens. Drink organic milk and eat organic yogurt, cheese and beef as cows are fed grains that have been sprayed with pesticides and these are then concentrated in their milk and meat. Don't use bleached pads and tampons they are loaded with estrogen mimickers. Go to the health food store and buy unbleached feminine hygiene products. Do not microwave foods in plastic (especially baby formula) - estrogen-mimickers lurk in plastics. Look for tolulene and phthalate-free nail polish and let your dry cleaned clothing air out of the plastic bags for several days before wearing. Most importantly take the following eight nutrients found in EstroSenseTM that help keep estrogen healthy and detoxify and eliminate carcinogenic estrogens:

  • Rosemary extract, a potent antioxidant, inhibits mammary cancer development and it helps to detoxify carcinogenic estrogens.
  • Lycopene found in tomatoes, pink grapefruit, papaya, guava and watermelon, was recently shown to reduce a women's risk of breast cancer by 36 percent when those women took 6.5 mg per day.
  • Sulfurophane, from broccoli extract, has been shown to stimulate the body's production of detoxification enzymes that eliminate harmful xenoestrogens. Sulfurophane is also a powerful antioxidant slowing the aging process.
